Trailer Park - MacGyver (New TV Series)
(Actual trailer is at the bottom you can scroll down)
There is an old criticism of television companies, "they've run out of ideas." I'm not one to believe that, however with Rush Hour's attempt at television, Lethal Weapon's upcoming series, and now MacGyver, I think they're getting lazy.
I mainly say that because Rush Hour TV series was just terrible, and I'm afraid they will do the same to the upcoming series. Lethal Weapon has a trailer that shows some potential, but its not like I liked everything about the trailer and it did not make me think, "I can't wait to see it."
So here we have MacGyver, a remake of an old television show which I liked a lot and watched as much as I could. Sure I was only a lad at the time, and I only saw the reruns but I dug MacGyver's ingenuity and charisma. In the original show, 'Mac' was an independent troubleshooter hired by the government, and later the Phoenix foundation, to go to different places and help someone overcome their oppressor, or solve whatever injustice was going on. Richard Dean Anderson's (MacGyver) performance helped make the show for me. Instead of him coming off like some kind of super spy, he came off more like an everyman. Until you locked him in a death trap with a paper clip and bubblegum.
This is of course what makes him a special. Most of the fun was watching what he could make out of what was around him to solve any specific problem he was in. While he was involved in fights, the main attraction was to see what new "MacGyverisms" he came up with next.
This new show seems completely different which automatically puts me at odds with it. While the MacGyverisms are there, it seems as if that is the only thing they have in common. The original had charisma that made Mac seem a little bit of a ladies-man. Whoever this new guy is, he seems to lack the same charisma and 'everyman' qualities that the original had. Then again this is a completely different show.
The original was a one man solution to just about any national or international problem you could think of. He would go in alone and either get help from people in that situation or just solve it himself. In this new show he seems to be part of a team. Not the leader of, just part of some kind of crime fighting team. Its a definite change but not necessarily a deal breaker. The key to any good show is the writing, and unfortunately I did not see anything here that made me think this would be a good one. To be fair, I didn't see anything overly bad either. Sure I hate the new kid's hair, but its better than a mullet right?
I don't really yet know what to make of this show. I haven't seen enough to know if I will dislike the show, but I did see quite a few signs pointing to it. I'm still going to check out the first episode regardless of what comes next. I hope I am wrong and this will turn out into a great show, but right now I have nothing but trepidation about it.

If you have a MacGyver void that needs to be filled, the original series is on Netflix. I've only recently started watching it again and it sort of holds up. Like... not really, but kind of. Richard Dean Anderson is really the one who carries the show. At least for the few episodes I've been watching so far. I've rarely (if ever) have seen these early episodes, and I'm hoping the series gets better as time goes on. I only really have this on in the background. I turn it on my Ipad as I'm making breakfast or dinner. So far its not really living up to what I remember, but I'm not ready to give up on it just yet.
